Does hair transplant look natural?

A good hair transplant is completely undetectable and looks perfectly natural if the right technique is used correctly by a skilled team.

The number of people getting a hair transplant is a lot higher than you might think, so you actually see many people who have had hair transplant in your daily life but you cannot tell if they have had the procedure. In fact, this example is the best answer to the question:

“Does hair transplant look natural?”

Within 2 months after hair transplant, you will begin to see the first results when your hair starts to grow back. This hair is not a wig or anyone else’s hair. It is your natural hair transplanted from your donor area, so there is no reason why it should look unnatural – as long as the procedure is done by a skilled hair transplant team using the latest technology.

The color, texture, and growth rate of the transplanted hair will have the same characteristics of your natural hair.

  • When you cut your nail, the nail that grows back is your own nail and looks natural.
  • When the scabs are gone after a cut or burn, the skin regenerating underneath the scabs is still your own skin and looks natural.
  • Similarly, the hair that is transplanted is your own hair, and it grows longer, becomes thicker, and looks natural.

FUE technique used in hair restoration over recent years has proved very successful. It achieves the most natural appearance and leaves no visible scar unlike FUT technique.

In this regard, FUE technique is considered a revolution in the field of hair restoration.

Then why do some hair transplants look unnatural?

Suppose you travel to a city that you do not know well and you plan to eat out at a restaurant. You find two restaurants, one filled with customers and the other with no customers.

Which one would you choose?

The answer is obvious for most of us: We choose the crowded one.

By doing so, we think we will be minimizing possible risks. The fact that the place is crowded acts as a recommendation for us. If the place is crowded, we naturally assume that many people are satisfied with the service and the staff is probably great.

Likewise, when choosing a doctor, we follow the advice of the people around us. This applies to almost every important decision in our lives, from the choice of furniture to mobile phone or car; we value any advice from people we trust.

Trusting an expert with your hair transplant is of vital importance to minimize the risks. Hair transplants done by inexperienced people with no expertise in such procedures might cause various problems that are even more serious than unnatural-looking hair.

For that reason, we strongly recommend you to stay away from unlicensed and illegal centers where hair transplants are performed by inexperienced people.

There are four main reasons why a hair transplant might look unnatural:

1- Transplantation of hair follicles in such a way that they do not match the exit angle or direction of the native hair.

There is no a single hair pattern, exit angle or hair direction applicable to all patients and what is natural for one patient may prove quite the opposite for another. The frontal hairline should be designed to suit the shape of the face. The doctor should first analyze the exit angles and direction of hair and then transplant the follicles to match such patterns to get the most natural appearance.

2- Using different donor hair other than the hair in the back of the head

The use of regions (such as the chest, leg, etc.) outside the donor site in the back of your head to harvest grafts may impair the natural appearance of your hair.

3- Implanting more or fewer grafts than needed.

The doctor should first determine the number of hair strands per cm2 in your donor site and then transplant about an equal number of hair strands per cm2 to the recipient site. Each hair follicle contains different number of hair strands. These are scattered randomly. Some follicles have just one hair strand and some two, while others can contain 3 or in rare cases 4 hair strands.

Therefore, we follow the same pattern while transplanting hair to the recipient area by randomly distributing hair follicles with single and multiple hair strands in the same fashion. While designing the frontal hairline it is important to transplant the grafts containing a single hair strand as the native frontal hairline usually consists of follicles with a single strand.

4- Failure to follow doctor’s advice after the procedure

Strict adherence to medical advice after every surgical procedure is vital to ensure faster recovery and desired results. If you do not comply with your doctor’s advice after the procedure, you may risk the chances of success.

Apart from these, factors such as wrong hair density in the recipient area, inexperienced hair transplant team, transplanting high number of grafts (4000-5000) in a single session will cause your hair to look unnatural.
